DOCTORS from Cuba will be recruited once cleared by the Medical Board and Department of Health, says Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
He told The National that doctors, including those from Cuba, were needed in many parts of the country to help improve health services.
“Sickness is not just confined to one area or region. We need doctors throughout the country,” he said.
“So once the medical board and the national department of health clear the recruitment process, we will bring in the Cuban doctors.”
Cuban President Raul Castro, in a meeting with O’Neill in 2016, had agreed to provide PNG with doctors.
They signed a memorandum of understanding for Cuba to assist in the PNG health workforce, health research and training, medicines and medical supplies and technology, financing, information and communication technology, assets and infrastructure.
Health and HIV-Aids Minister Sir Puka Temu said they were working towards improving health services in the country.
“The new cancer facility, kidney and cardiac facility at the Port Moresby General Hospital is progressing well and will be completed soon,” he said.
“The Government continues to provide the budget and the infrastructure to help improve health services in the country, and will soon bring in Cuban doctors to serve in the country.”

  • It is frustrating that the hospitals run out of medication and other life saving materials, yet the health minister is saying that it’s not a big issue. Now the PM is trying to bring in the doctors from overseas and how about the doctors we have here in our own country? Rather bringing the expensive doctors in, he should send the PNG doctors for training and equipped themselves with what the country gonna need. So they are all paid the same. Now the Cuban doctors are coming, they will be paid higher than our own country men/women who have the same knowledge and this is a very big slap in the face.

We poor people get our small salary tax deducted to pay for the Cuban doctors and they pay tax to their country to be more developed. We should all be paying tax to our own country develop. This is a one man decision and not in the interest of the whole country. This should put to the parliament floor and other public areas for debate.
