PM defends necessity of trips abroad

PRIME Minister James Marape says overseas engagements he has been involved in are in the national interest and not a waste of public funds as claimed by some.
“As a sovereign nation, representations at important international meetings are at the head-of-government level, hence, I travel long hours to attend these meeting,” Marape said in a statement.
“For this trip next week to Washington, I was personally invited by US President Joe Biden to attend the second US-Pacific Islands Forum Summit.
“With many outstanding bilateral issues with the US, it is necessary that I travel to ensure PNG’s national interests take precedence in Washington.”
He was responding to criticisms of his recent overseas trips by Ialibu-Pangia MP Peter O’Neill who accused Marape of trying to evade challenges facing the country.
Marape said he was only fulfilling his responsibilities as the Prime Minister and had confidence in State Enterprises Minister William Duma who would be the Acting Prime Minister during his absence. Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso is currently abroad.
“I want to emphasise that I am neither fleeing from our country’s issues nor casually touring the globe. I am fulfilling my duties as the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea,” Marape said.
He assured the nation that he would participate in the two-day summit in Washington and return home soon after.
He recently returned from trips to Israel, Indonesia, and France which he said were undertaken “with the best interests of PNG in mind”.
“I remain dedicated to working diligently while abroad and promptly returning to our country,” he said.
“Travelling abroad does not stall the progress of our nation. We have a capable acting prime minister, supported by our ministers and the public service, who ensure the continuity of government affairs.”
