PRIME Minister James Marape, pictured, says five policemen have been suspended for allegedly shooting dead two men in Erima, Port Moresby, on Sept 29.
“The suspension is to facilitate investigations into the shooting and killings,” he said yesterday at a haus krai gathering of the families of the two killed.
Marape also urged the families of the dead to take legal action and allow the process of the law to take its course.
“Just because the deceased are from where I come from in Hela does not mean there will be any short cuts in the investigation,” he said.
“I encourage you to bring the matter to court and have it prosecuted.
“There were many witnesses, and I encourage all of you to give evidence to police if you want justice for the dead.”
Marape said he was informed by acting police Comm David Manning that he (Manning) would not hide any of those involved in the Erima shooting.
“But at the same time, we are working hard to ensure the remains of those killed are sent home to rest, then we can allow police to conduct investigations smoothly.”
Marape said he fully supported the police force to initiate measures to improve the discipline of police personnel.
“I have spoken to the Police Minister (Brian Kramer) to ensure insurance and other benefits are extended to the families of police personnel,” he said.
“The Police Minister and I are now initiating a special programme to give out golden rewards to policemen and officers who had served with dignity.
“When they retire, the state will reward them with a little extra money, besides what they are entitled after retirement.”
Marape also said the priority of the police commissioner now was to raise the level of discipline in the force.
“Those with bad attitude will only get one or two chances depending on their disciplinary records.
“They will be sacked from the force, go to prison, or sent back to their villages.”
Meanwhile, National Capital District governor Powes Parkop, Moresby-South MP Justin Tkachenko and Moresby North East MP John Kaupa, who accompanied Marape, all asked Manning to ensure that the policemen involved in the shooting were identified and dealt with.

  • Police always act bully on civilian many times. IF they are intellectual they should understand their assign task and responsibility to protect life and property but they used to act as a Rambo and burst anyone in daily arrest. Thank you very much now all the cops need to take into their consideration before dealing with people.
