PM launches alternate highway in Madang

Prime Minster Peter O’Neill launched the new Madang-Usino Highway on Friday as an alternate route for people travelling between Madang, Lae and the Highlands.
Hundreds gathered at Usino government station to witness the launch, which was among several other projects.
The Usino-Yal Road will run through the government station and link the Yal area in Transgogol in Madang district.
Usino-Bundi MP Jimmy Uguro tailored the project in 2016 and 2017 when he was executive officer of former Madang provincial administrator Daniel Aloi
Uguro has secured K10 million for the road.
O’Neill was invited to launch the road to show the Government’s commitment and support to road infrastructure in Usino-Bundi and Madang.
Uguro said the Usino-Yal Road was shorter in distance, flat and would be very comfortable for PMVs and passengers to use.
He said Ramu Nickel was transporting its chromite out of Lae because the Madang-Usino highway was not always in good condition.
Uguro said once the new highway was completed, Ramu Nickel would be asked to use the highway to transport its chromite out of Madang.
Madang Governor Peter Yama said Madang had the potential to raise more internal revenue by using its port to ship out sugar, oil palm, beef and chromite.
He said the Usino-Yal Road was the solution.
