PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill was made a traditional chief or lapan of the Manus people during the provincial assembly in Lorengau last week.
He was initiated by the great lapans in the presence of the council of chiefs who represent the 12 LLGs in the province.
O’Neill was treated to various rituals in which his feet were washed before he entered the assembly chambers.
“It is certainly an honour to be made a chief of your lapan assembly; I can assure you that this government will not let Manus province down,” he told assembly members and the council of chiefs.
“We will ensure basic infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, roads, and bridges, among others, are maintained and rebuilt where necessary.”
O’Neill said the government comprised of young, experienced and vibrant leaders who had pledged to serve their country and people.
“I can guarantee you all that, this government is devoted and dedicated to serve the people.”
During his brief visit, O’Neill visited the asylum seekers’ processing centre in Lorengau and the Lombrum naval base.
