THE status of Braun Memorial Clinic in Finschhafen, Morobe, will be upgraded to rural hospital and have its requirement met by the government, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has promised.

O’Neill was given a tour on Wednesday of the Evangelical Lutheran Church-run clinic, that has complemented the Angau General Hospital, in Lae, serving patients from all over the country over the years.

O’Neill was accompanied by Finschhafen MP and Speaker Theodore Zurenuoc, Morobe Governor Kelly Naru and other officials.

He was impressed with the services offered there, especially primary health care as well as services from the locally-trained community health workers in nearby Braun Lutheran School of Nursing and visiting international specialists.

The prime minister’s entourage visited patients, their minders and health workers in different sections of the clinic before making the announcement to the staff, board and management of the clinic.

“I will, with the assistance from the Speaker, Governor Kelly Naru and other ministers here, override the medical board and upgrade the status of Braun into a rural hospital and get the government to meet its specific needs,” O’Neill said.

The health workers praised O’Neill’s decision.
