PRIME Minister James Marape says a response will be made on what the Government is doing regarding temporary special measures for women’s representation in Parliament.
He was responding to questions by East Sepik Governor Allan Bird about what the Government had done in the last 12 months to progress the issue of temporary special measures for women in Parliament and if work had been done, and when would it be brought to Parliament for ratification.
Bird also asked if the prime minister would assure women that Parliament would give them access next year.
Marape said: “We made commitment for these measures to be brought into Parliament.”
“Let me ask through you, deputy speaker, that I reserve my right to make a response to the question in this sitting of Parliament.
“I’ll get up-to-date response on what the Government has (done) on this,” Marape said.
Bird said: “We made several commitments last year and I think the prime minister made a commitment on the floor in relation to some temporary special measures for women’s representation on the floor of the house.”
“We are infamous for being one of only three countries on earth that do not have women represented on the floor,” Bird said.
“It has been 12 months now since the issue was raised on this floor and there was a response.”
