PUBLIC solicitors of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday to strengthen legal work between the two countries.
It came after a week-long visit to Port Moresby by the Solomon Island team led by public solicitor George Grey.
The memorandum is about the programme known as the Wantok Legal Network to strengthen the legal work between the two nations.
Papua New Guinea’s public solicitor Leslie Mamu said the arrangement was important because of the shared culture.
“Based on the MoU signed, four Solomon Islands lawyers would come to PNG for four months and PNG would send one or two lawyers to the Solomon Islands for a longer period because the lawyers would assist the lawyers there to draft court documents in civil practice,” he said.
Mamu said they hoped to build a similar platform in the region.
Grey said they learnt a lot from their visit.
Grey said they would also like to get some PNG lawyers, admin officers and managers to serve at the Public Solicitor’s Office in Honiara.
Grey and his team visited the University of Papua New Guinea Law School, Bomana Prison, newly-build court complex, a private law firm, and they also met the public prosecutor, and Justice and Attorney-General Department secretary Dr Eric Kwa.
