CRICKET PNG’s global award winning junior participation programme has received yet another boost with Getty Image photographer Mark Dadswell winning the award for Best Sport Photography at the 2011 Australian Sports Commission Media Awards for a picture he captured covering Cricket PNG’s BSP school programme.
The photo of children participating in beach cricket in rural PNG beat nominations from several major international sporting events.
Dadswell who took the photo when in PNG covering the programme for the ICC East Asia-Pacific office says the experience he had in PNG was a memorable one, and to receive recognition for the photo is a great honor.
“It is terrific to receive an Australian Sports Commission media award, particularly when it comes from such a worthy programme run by the ICC, promoting and coaching the game of cricket in PNG,” he said.
“The trip to PNG with the ICC was a busy but enjoyable couple of days, travelling to a remote village to see so many small children getting so much enjoyment out of a days’ cricket coaching was a real eye opener for me.”
ICC East Asia-Pacific regional development manager Kieran McMillan says it’s great that the work of the ICC EAP member countries is making it into the public eye.
“Many of our member countries are doing wonderful things to develop the game for children,” he said.
“It’s great that some of this work can be documented by talented photographers such as Mark and really captures the enjoyment that children have playing our wonderful sport,” McMilan said.
