IN AN effort to learn more from New Zealand in the area of trade, a delegation from Papua New Guinea led by International Trade and Investment Minister Richard Maru will visit Aotearoa in April.
Maru and New Zealand Minister for Agriculture and Trade Todd McClay agreed on the visit during a meeting on Sunday while attending the World Trade Organisation ministerial conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
He said the visit to New Zealand would be to learn from the experience of their capital market industry.
PNG will seek NZ’s support to transform its Securities Commission and capital market industry.
Maru said the delegation would also visit poultry and dairy farms and invite Kiwi investors from these industries to PNG.
“We want to look at New Zealand’s chicken industry and invite their investors to come to PNG because we import over K100 million worth of chicken annually.
“This results in loss of jobs and revenue for our small businesses and industry. We want to stop that,” he said.
“We also do not want to be exposed to the risk of diseases like the avian influenza.
“We want to produce enough day-old chicks to supply our domestic need.
“We also want to invite some New Zealand investors to invest in our special economic zones.
“We also want to meet the Indigenous Maori Commission to discuss and learn about how indigenous Maori businesses are doing business in major industries.”
The PNG Indigenous Business Summit will be held in August in Kokopo, East New Britain.
