PAPUA NEW GUINEA will always be grateful to Australia for its financial and development assistance over the years which has contributed so much to improving people’s lives, says Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae.
Sir Bob told Australian High Commissioner to PNG Jon Philp that PNG would always treasure the close relationship the two countries have been enjoying over the years.
Philp and deputy Australian high commissioner Caitlin Wilson were at Government House on a courtesy call.
Sir Bob mentioned as examples, Australia’s funding assistance to the redevelopment of the Angau Hospital in Lae, and education and scholarship programmes many had benefited.
Sir Bob also mentioned Australia’s influence in the development of rugby league in the country.
“We are also very grateful for supporting us in our efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic, despite Australia now experiencing the second wave of the virus in parts of your country,” he said.
“It is unfortunate that lives have been lost and so we are very grateful that despite that, the people of Australia have continued to support and assist us.”
Philp commended the Government for the immediate action taken in response to the Covid-19 in shutting down international borders and restricting the movement of people under the state of emergency.
