PAPUA New Guinea is still a “sleeping giant” in football, says Papua New Guinea international and Lae City defender Alwin Komolong. The National Soccer League premiership winner told The National that not much had been done prior to the 2019 Pacific Games, with PNG yet to fully tap into its full potential of players at the representative level. “I believe we are a sleeping giant that haven’t realised our full potential,” he said. “But I believe we can get there with the right support. “I would definitely like to see some more activity on the international stage. “As some people may note, a major issue with our consistency is the lack of international matches in Fifa windows and between major tournaments such as the Pacific Games and Oceania Football Confederation Nations Cup. “It would be definitely encouraging to play more international matches and have the appropriate preparations.” Komolong said it was a goal for him this year to return to the international stage, however, he was content with his decision to remain with reigning champions City.
“Obviously, the goal would be to get back on the international stage and secure a professional contract again,” he said. “My major goal for the year is to have as much success as possible and remain injury-free. “I am happy where I am right now, given the circumstances. “I am looking forward to being successful with City. “It (last season’s title win) was a tremendous achievement, given the circumstances and events. “Personally, it was also an achievement as it was my first NSL title in PNG, having played and lost in two other grand finals.”
