KUMULS flyer Garry Lo says he is eager to win back the support of his fans at this weekend’s inaugural Rugby League World Cup Nines in Sydney, Australia.
Lo has made five appearances for Papua New Guinea, with the winger starring at the 2017 World Cup hosted by Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand.
Lo’s performances at the showpiece event helped him secure a deal with the Castleford Tigers but his stay at the English Super League club ended prematurely and he found himself back in the Digicel Cup.
And after missing a few test matches following a short stint in the French Elite One Championship, Lo is eager to play a prominent role at the World Cup Nines as he looks to win back the support of his fans.
Lo’s inclusion in the SP Hunters squad late in the Queensland Intrust Super Cup (ISC) season was to qualify him for the nines tournament and the end-of-season tests against the British Lions and New Zealand.
Lo said he was happy to represent the country again.
“It’s been quite a while. I’ve been away in France and when I came back, I missed a few test matches but I’m grateful to represent my country again,” he said.
“At the end of the ISC (Intrust Super Cup) season, I took a month’s break to spend time with my family in Mt Hagen.
“This is the best squad we have available with majority of the team consisting of overseas-based players.
“We have three players from the Hunters and one from the Digicel Cup.
“Our training sessions have so far been good. We’re picking up the momentum and building well for the tournament.
“It’s always good to be in camp with the Kumuls. We’re cracking jokes and we always enjoy being around each other.” When asked about the criticism he had copped last year, Lo said: “I accept it all. But I’d like to thank my family for always being supportive of me throughout my career.
“I’ll try to turn things around by giving my best to rediscover the form that made me a great footballer.”
Meanwhile, Lo has thanked the PNG Rugby Football League for giving him the opportunity to represent the country again.
