PNG lacks crime data

DEPARTMENT Justice and Attorney-General Secretary Dr Eric Kwa says there is no proper data and statistics of crimes in the country reaching his office because of a lack of partnership coordination.
Kwa said there was no commitment between the police and defence departments to provide reports to the department on how crimes happened.
“Police Commissioner Gari Baki, who gets his crime reports weekly from the provinces, does not come to my department to report it. We also have no data base committee,” he said.
Kwa said from the previous summit, they had a report that indicated a total lack of crime data and statistics to determine the current trend and causes of crime committed.
Some government agencies and non-government organisations had their crime data and statistics which were either isolated or fragmented and did not present a realistic picture of the crime situation in the country.
