PAPUA New Guinea have launched their Harvey Norman Women’s National Championships campaign with a 0-22 loss NSW Country side at the Gold Coast yesterday.
While Country were in control from start to finish to post a 22-0 win, the match was much closer than the score indicated, with some stoic defensive efforts from the PNG side.
The opening day of the championships saw plenty of exciting football played, despite some rainy conditions throughout the day.
Rugby league fans got their first opportunity to see new teams Fiji and Papua New Guinea in action and saw Las Vegas NRL Combine winners MarCaya Bailous and Megan Pakulis get their first taste of Championships football, playing for the Gems and later featuring with South Australia. There were strong wins from NSW City, Northern Territory, Queensland Sapphires, First Nations Gems, NSW Country and Australian Defence Force Rugby League on the first day of play.
