MINISTER for Education Nick Kuman has challenged education experts to formulate a curriculum that provides practical learning for students in primary and secondary schools.
“Why can’t we have a curriculum to teach them how to do basic book-keeping, banking, writing proper business letters and even using a smart phone?” Kuman said.
He said this on Wednesday at the 26th senior education officers Conference at 17 Mile outside Port Moresby.
Kuman said that it was important for students to learn basic practical skills for living in a modern changing society.
He also challenged those who gathered to work together and provide technical pathways for students who did not make it past Grade 12 and to increase the skilled-based workforce in the country.
He also said that there was a need for text books to be written in Papua New Guinean contexts and observed that there has been a decline of student performance in mathematics and science in the last 10 years.
“By 2021, there has to be a national text book for every subject. Our students are naturally bright but we have to do our part and support them.”
