PNG Ports to host annual managers’ conference

PNG Ports Corporation (PNGPCL) is currently embarking on vigorous change initiatives.
For the smooth transition and continued change within the PNGPCL, the company is again hosting a three days managers’ conference themed ‘Managing change’ which will be held at the Hideaway Hotel from Sep 30 to Oct 2.
PNG Ports is utilising the managers’ conference as a vehicle to drive the change management initiatives and, therefore, it is necessary that all managers register presentation topics in line with the conference theme in order for management to screen and plan the programme for this year.
This conference has been an annual event for the senior management and especially port managers to exchange valuable information useful for the operation of each of their ports.
The three-day conference will see the managers involved in the exchange of knowledge, experience  and take back with them valuable information gained in this experience.
PNGPCL is implementing strategic directives and corporate plans requiring major re-organisation and revitalisation of its services, and also rehabilitation of its facilities throughout PNG.
This is driven by the need to meet the challenges and demands placed upon it, to not only cater for the exponential organic growth in imports, exports and coastal cargo movements, but also to ensure that Papua New Guinea meet its international obligations with respect to maritime safety and security.
Inevitably, change requires some movement away from individual comfort zones and the management of PNGPCL has the backing and full support of all its loyal and professional employees, board of directors, the Independent Public Business Corporation (shareholders) and  stakeholders including unions, Department of Transport, Department of Public Enterprises, stevedores and agents.
A number of the initiatives presently being progressed will fundamentally change the day-to-day operations of a number of ports, with the stated intention being to improve efficiencies and strive towards the provision of excellent customer services and modern port facilities.
Some of these initiatives include the introduction of harbour cranes in Lae and Port Moresby and sophisticated port management software, tightening of security and restricting access at all ports to meet international obligations, and cargo x-raying technology in collaboration with the customs.
PNGPCL manages 16 ports throughout PNG and has delegated regulatory authority from the Department of Transport for the management of all ports in the country.
