PNG Power Ltd is installing up to 22 new high voltage transformers to boost power supply throughout the country.

The new transformers will be designed, manufactured and supplied by China’s Qiantang River Electric (QRE International) following the signing of a contract between PNG Power (PPL) and QRE last week.

“This is the second time a major system equipment upgrade project is undertaken for PPL to replace and upgrade transformers to make electricity accessible to the growing demand by its consumers,” PNG Power chief executive officer Tony Koiri said.

He said many transformers were more than 30 years old and therefore needed to be replaced.

“This will see an increase in electricity supply to cater for the increasing demand for electricity in PNG,” Koiri said.

He said the installation programme would begin in July and be completed in November 2014.

Koiri said that nine transformers would be installed to boost supply in the Ramu grid covering the Highlands and Mamose regions, six in Port Moresby grid, two in the Gazelle grid and the remaining five would be held in stock as spares in the event of damage to the existing transformers.

QRE International had started designing the new transformers and the first two would arrive in June.
