PNG Power signs MoU with police

PNG Power Ltd (PPL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) last Friday, to ensure a safer neighbourhood for its employees.
The two housing units located at PPL’s Saraga (6-Mile) compound will be allocated to police officers for accommodation in return for added security provision to PPL staff living there.
According to PPL’s CEO Tony Koiri, the compound had become the target of criminal elements in the area.
“Fourteen months ago, an incident occurred where criminals entered the PPL Saraga 6-Mile compound and terrorised the community,” he said.
He said PPL was proud to resource the police force, who will be providing security at the compound.
“We understand that the police force needs a lot of resources to be able to carry out its functions efficiently while playing an important role in ensuring safer communities,” he said.
NCD metropolitan commander Supt Fred Yakasa thanked the management and staff of PPL for the opportunity in formalising the agreement.
He said he expected the three police officers to be on good behaviour while at the compound.
“There will be strict guidelines later on as to how you should be behaving and conducting yourselves (police officers) whilst residing there,” he said.
He said those who misused the properties belonging to PPL would be dealt with accordingly.
The MoU, signed on June 30 last year, is a first of its kind especially for state-owned enterprises and PNG Power is confident this arrangement will ensure its staff and tenants are provided sufficient security and protection at all time.
PNG Power believes this arrangement will strengthen ties and foster good working relationship between both parties.
The agreement also ensures the police officers work closely with the local communities at Saraga and 6-Mile to ensure a safer neighbourhood is created.
