PNG supported draconian law

Letters

THE British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the security law recently imposed on Hong Kong citizens by China, to the dismay of many democracies, as a clear and serious violation of the 1997 joint declaration between the UK and China.
The new law will effectively crush free speech and freedom of assembly in Hong Kong, and will precipitate an exodus from the island.
Yet, at the Human Rights Council of the United Nations held recently, PNG voted in support of this draconian new law.
They were not alone: 52 other nations endorsed the resolution, many of them with dubious human rights records in their own countries, and many also heavily in debt to the Chinese through projects sponsored by China through their Belt and Road Initiative.
PNG signed up for the belt and road initiative, and it is ironic that this country, whose robust constitution guarantees free speech and freedom of assembly to its own citizens, sees fit to deny these basic rights to others.
Our constitution guarantees a free press, and I trust that newspapers will take it on themselves to investigate and publish why our Government took this bizarre line and helped to legitimise the stripping of basic human rights from Hong Kong citizens.
Shame on you, PNG.

  • Country’s constitution shall be upholding, be respectful to the law legislation of all the countries in the world , USA & British they need to introspect what they have done in the past to China

  • BRI is President Xi’s latest economic growth engine/policy for China, about 10 years old.

You probably forgot that PNG also always maintain a One China Policy since Bilateral Ties with the Peoples’ Republic of China began a year or two after independence in 1975.

So our man in UN is only maintaining our Diplomatic Stand with PRC.
One Country Two Systems is the agreement between PRC and Britain for handover of Hong Kong in 1997.
PNG recognises that deal but overall HK is China…PNG upholds one China Policy.
