A PAPUA New Guinea woman has been found guilty by the Brisbane District Court of being part of an international drug-smuggling syndicate smuggling cocaine into Australia, a court registry officer has revealed.
Criminal Registry Court Service officer Dean Papas said Dulcie Wagambio-Witchard, 34, from East Sepik, on charges relating to dealing with the proceeds of crime, was found guilty on Friday and would be sentenced at a date yet to be set.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) said Wagambio-Witchard was accused of being involved in a shipment of cocaine, estimated to have a street value of about A$105 million (K252.4 million)
That shipment was to have been transported from Peru in South America via Singapore, PNG and Torres Strait to Queensland.
Wagambio-Witchard, who lives in Logan, Brisbane, is out on bail.
Her arrest was in relation to syndicated international drug-smuggling being investigated by Australian Federal Police.
Meanwhile, a PNG man is still in custody in Brisbane for alleged involvement in the same smuggling syndicate.
According to an AFP media statement, the 36-year-old voluntarily travelled to Australia from Port Moresby at the request of AFP and was arrested on arrival at Brisbane Airport in June.
