PNG women’s team register 6-1 win over Vanuatu in 3rd pool match

THE national women’s team registered a 6-1 win over Vanuatu in their third Pacific Games pool match at the JS Blatter Football Complex in Apia, Samoa, yesterday.
The side remain undefeated after three matches and they intend to keep it that way as they pursue their fifth straight Games gold in Samoa.
Yesterday’s match saw a masterclass in attack, with PNG dominating possession and using their speed to create room for goal-scoring opportunities.
Opportunities came early in the 6th minute with Marie Kaipu scoring the opener. Her teammate Selina Unamba followed it up with another goal in the 8th minute.
A spirited Vanuatu women’s side were able to register a goal through Jane Alatoa which would later go on to be their only one for the match. PNG went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Skipper Sandra Birum was instrumental in coordinating PNG’s defensive efforts which starved Vanuatu of any attempts on goal.
Kaipu opened the scores again in the second half, bagging herself a double for the match.
Ramona Padio also bagged a double for PNG, a feat which she managed to continue since the start of the tournament scoring two goals per game. She has now score six goals.
The last goal went to PNG youngest team member, Assaiso Gossie, who finished the match on a high.
Head coach Frederica Sakette and her assistant Margaret Aka will be looking to tie up some loose ends as they now turn their attention to completing an almost perfect tournament for PNG.
PNG will face Cook Islands on Thursday in their final pool match as they look to top Pool B and book themselves a spot in the gold-medal playoff on Saturday.
