Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) president John Kapi Natto, his executive committee members and the entire football fraternity are in mourning.
The fraternity is saddened to learn the tragic death of Laiwaden goalkeeper Mikes Gewa, pictured.
Kapi Natto described the anguish felt over the loss of one so young, one who had his life set out before him.
“We have lost an upcoming player and a true son of Papua New Guinea. One who had football in his heart. Football was his life,” Kapi Natto said.
“This is a tragic event — a young man playing for Laiwaden, dreaming of football glory, to be cut down in the richness of youth leaves us all with sore hearts, tears and prayers for Mikes’ family, friends, teammates, coaches and Laiwaden officials.
“Mikes had played for Madang Soccer Association, Madang and now Laiwaden with distinction, he was a prospect that undoubtedly would have had a bright future in the game.
“No words can fully express our grief and dismay at seeing this happen, we can only pass on our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Mikes Gewa, and hope they will get some strength from the outpouring of love and support.”
PNGFA will observe a minute of silence at all Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League matches this weekend to pay respect for Gewa.
Gewa lost his life on Sunday after spending five weeks at the Angau General Hospital following an injury sustained on the field during a Northern Conference match in Lae.
Gewa leaves behind his young partner and newborn baby.
