PNGFA names 80 players in train-on squad for qualifiers

THE Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) has named a train-on squad of 80 players in preparation for the qualifiers of the 2023 Women’s World Cup which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
The players were selected from the 2020-2021 Women’s National Soccer League (WNSL) and the previous national team.
PNGFA general secretary Pius Letenge said the players from the northern part of the country would assemble at Lae’s Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium and 11-Mile outside the Morobe capital while the Southern footballers would train at Port Moresby’s PNG Football Stadium.
Letenge said for the eight Sepik players who were on the train-on squad, a smaller camp would be arranged for them to train under coach Gorden Torovu in Wewak until the school holidays were they would join either of the Lae or Port Moresby camps.
The northern players will train under coaches Susan Watpore, Edna Thomas and Rachael Wadunah.
For the southern players, PNGFA has appointed coaches Frederica Sakette and Miriam Lanta to head their training programmes.
Letenge said all the programmes for the train-on squad would be held in Lae and Port Moresby as per directions from the Office of the National Pandemic Response Controller and the PNG Sports Foundation.
