PAPUA New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) president John Kapi Natto and his executive committee have resolved to re-schedule their congress to June in Port Moresby.
The congress will also include the election of new office bearers for a four-year term. The congress, which was scheduled for Friday, was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
PNGFA general secretary Dimirit Mileng said it was important to comply with the Government’s directive on the declaration of the nationwide state of emergency. “As a responsible organisation, PNGFA will continue to take heed of the directives,” he said. “Therefore, it is impractical to stage the congress as per the earlier decision.”
Mileng said the decision was made after seeking the committee’s consideration and endorsement with the consent of Kapi Natto.
“We have further sought the consent of our international partners Oceania Football Confederation and Fifa, and they’ve acknowledged the decision,” he said.
“We hope that the pandemic continues to slow down globally with no new cases in PNG so that we can stage the congress.”
Meanwhile, Mileng encouraged the football fraternity to practise basic hygiene recommended by the Health Department, World Health Organisation and other partners.
