THE Papua New Guinea Football Association is still awaiting approval from the National Control Centre and the PNG Sports Foundation’s pandemic management committee on the resumption of its National Soccer League season.
Association general secretary Pius Letenge said as per a circular from the centre, they had put the season on hold from Sept 30 to last Saturday, however, they were still awaiting new instructions.
“We have discussed this matter at the management level and the competition department is awaiting a response from the centre and the committee regarding approval,” Letenge told The National yesterday.
“We have also requested (committee chairman) Dr Kapua Kapua to confirm whether the nation’s capital is a high-risk province because sports have been banned in all high-risk provinces. While we await responses on that and approval to resume the season, clubs have been advised to resume training, but under strict Coronavirus measures.
“This includes limiting the number of participants at one time to less than 20 in adherence to the Niupela Pasin protocols.”
Meanwhile, Letenge said they havd requested all 14 clubs to share their views and recommendations on whether the deferral should be extended.
“We haven’t heard back from the majority of the clubs, so no decision has been made yet,” he said.
“But the committee has assured us that competitions will be approved.
“When we get approval, we’ll give two weeks for teams to train and return to full fitness fitness before resuming the season.”
