THE Papua New Guinea Football Association’s (PNGFA) secretarial department will look at whether to appoint a domestic or international coach to prepare the national women’s team for the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.
Association president John Kapi Natto made this known and stressed that selectors must make transparent selections based on player performance.
He said the Women’s National Soccer League (WNSL) created a platform for young, aspiring footballers to showcase their talents and become better players.
“I’ve conveyed to the selectors and the secretary’s department that there’s no room for bias selection or picking people who you know,” Kapi Natto said.
“You must pick people who really impressed on game day on the field.”
Kapi Natto said the 2020- 21 season had unearthed many talented players in the Southern and Northern Conferences.
“I am impressed not only in the current national players, but the talents in both conferences,” he said.
“I’m sure when we have coaching selections, they’re in for a very tough time to pick a very good team who we must prepare for 2023.”
Kapi Natto said the competition had progressed well and they were confident more talents would emerge in the next season, commencing at the end of the year.
“PNGFA will select the coaches and they need to pick good players for the World Cup qulifiers, because we’ve only competed in Oceania,” he said.
“Competing against the other regions of the world is something that – whether we match their standard or not – we’re going to work on.”
With the WNSL concluding and the finals coming up, the appointment of the coach and selections for the national team are expected to be made soon.
