PAPUA New Guinea Football Association is yet to receive National Control Centre approval for the resumption of the National Soccer League season, says competitions director Roosje Suwae.
The association put the season on hold from Sept 30 to Saturday in compliance with the Coronavirus (Covid-19) measures currently in place.
Suwae told The National yesterday that although her department had set a tentative date for resumption, it would depend on the current situation and approval.
The competition only has five regular rounds before the finals.
According to Suwae, her department is considering mid-week matches once approval is granted, so the normal rounds can be completed quickly.
When asked if clubs would be given time to work on their fitness, given that most sides had suspended training to comply with the current measures, Suwae said it was their responsibility to remain fit.
“Players are responsible for their own fitness,” she said.
“We can only presume that players did some personal training at home during the lockdown.”
Association general secretary Pius Letenge said the continued increase in Covid-19 cases may affect the resumption of the season.
He said they were awaiting a response from the Office of the National Pandemic Response Controller on whether the ban on gathering of more than 20 people would end on Saturday.
