THERE will be no new Digicel Cup teams for the upcoming season due to the Coronavirus pandemic, according to the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition.
Due to the challenges and uncertainties of the pandemic, competition chairman Adrian Chow said the board had decided that there would be no additions to the 12-team Digicel Cup in the new season.
“There will be a review of the Digicel Cup strategic plan and the expansion of the competition will depend on this and the quality of future bids,” the competition said in a statement.
Chow acknowledged the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s funding which would enable the review and assist the development of the sport in PNG.
He thanked all the franchises and their sponsors for their commitment and continued participation in the competition, especially as the pandemic had disrupted many businesses, sports and social activities.
“The participation agreements will be finalised and franchise fees must be paid before season kick-off,” the competition said.
The season draw will be announced as soon as conditions under which the competition may proceed are clarified with the Office of the National Pandemic Response Controller.
Chow said preparations for the new season had started with all franchises undergoing pre-season training.
