PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Union’s (PNGRU) training and education programme is targeting more people for level-two accreditation with the goal of raising the standard of competition in the country.
PNGRU training and education coordinator Sailosi Druma said the accreditation was recognised by World Rugby and would boost coaches and trainers in their respective unions with the online component of the course completed during the state of emergency over the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I’ve encouraged unions to do their online exams while waiting (during the state of emergency),” he said.
“It is part of the assessment which is based on online modules so it’s a prerequisite and when we are allowed to travel again, we’ll be able to do the face-to-face course.
“After the online exams, we will deliver the courses and then they move into their practical which we will have to do during a specific timeframe before they can attain World Rugby level-two accreditation.
“We’ve got Goroka, East New Britain, Daru and Lae which will be the first four unions, as well as the two competitions in Port Moresby — Capital Rugby and National Capital District Rugby.
“So that’s what they are working on and hopefully by the end of this year, we can get some participants to cross the line and get accredited.”
Druma said the impact of Covid-19 on sporting programmes and facilities would affect the time in which the courses would be delivered and assessed but he was hopeful participants would make it.
