THE PNG Sustainable Development Programme Limited has handed over company assets and programmes in Daru and South Fly to the community through the provincial government and Government bodies.

These include the Daru Water Treatment and Sewerage project, the Tawao’o Point wharf and solar power kits to be used in the South Fly.

They were handed over in ceremonies in Daru on Friday.

“Although we were not the cause of these critical projects having to be halted, the company recognises that development has to continue,” PNGSDP chairman Sir Mekere Morauta said.

“The best way to do that is to ensure an orderly handover of projects and assets so that others can pick up from where we left off.

“The Daru water and sewerage project is an essential element in improving the health and well-being of the people of Daru.

“PNGSDP had spent more than K12 million on the design of the project and the purchase of equipment, and substantial work has been completed.”

Sir Mekere said it was essential that the project be completed because the existing systems had almost collapsed due to neglect by the national and provincial governments.

“PNGSDP deeply regrets that it had to halt this project but the company was left with no choice because the expropriation of the mine meant that we had no source of income to complete it and other projects and programmes,” he said.

Sir Mekere also handed over the Tawao’o Point wharf project, on which K1 million had been spent by PNGSDP mainly on the completion of pile-driving.
