THE PNG Women in Business (PNGWIB) Foundation is planning to set up a micro bank for its estimated 10,000 members to encourage ordinary local women to get into business.
It also wanted to set up at least  22 resource centres across the country.
Already, these two ideas have the support of National Capital District (NCD) Governor Powes Parkop, who handed over to the foundation a cheque for K10,000 – honouring a commitment he made prior to the successful holding of the PNGWIB exposition earlier this year in Lae, Morobe.
“I am happy to honour this commitment I made to this foundation … (on behalf of) the resident of the city and myself to show our support for the effort that the executives of the foundation are making towards helping a lot of our women in our city and around the country to get them to economic activities,” Parkop said.
Businesswoman and PNGWIB founder Janet Sape was at hand to receive the cheque.
Parkop said: “In respect to the initiative to have a micro bank for women, I fully support this initiative.
“I think if we set up such a facility, it will really help a lot of women who are working out there with little (financial) support.
“So I think if we have a specific micro bank facility that is there helping women to access finance and also most importantly manage it, then it would be a giant leap forward for our women,” he said.
