A former policeman was arrested and charged with impersonation after he was caught wearing a police uniform in a fox unit vehicle in Port Moresby yesterday.
Director for Police Internal Affairs Supt Emil Alpha said Clement Manguva of East Sepik was discharged as a police officer in 2019 after he committed two serious charges of assault in 2018.
He said Manguva had been pretending to be a police officer since he was dismissed until he was caught by Police internal Investigation Unit (IIU).
“There have been reports of ex-police officers who have been dismissed and are still wearing police uniforms conducting official police duties,” he said.
He said most reports of police misconducts and brutality had been contributed by such ex-policemen pretending to be on duty.
Asst Comm/ACP for NCD/Central Anthony Wagambie Jnr said he was aware that a couple more were being entertained by serving members of the constabulary.
He said he had made it known to the NCD Metropolitan Supt Gedion Ikumu and Central Police Commander Supt John Midi that accountability of personnel should be maintained.
“Those line officers and supervisors who have knowingly allowed this policeman to illegally conduct himself as a policeman will be dealt with,” he said.
Meanwhile, Manguva was charged under the Police Act, section 138 (a) for impersonation.
