A POLICEMAN accused of shooting a security guard at a boom-gate is detained at the Mendi police station, police said.

Police officer Manase Ibopi from Nipa district attached to the Kaupena police highway patrol was arrested last week by provincial police commander Chief Insp Sibron Patoto.

He was accused of shooting Wesley Terry from Kaupena village in Imbonggu district.

Patoto said Ibopi allegedly shot at locals manning the gate at Kaupena on Jan 25.

He said Ibogi faced a charge of unlawfully discharging a firearm and for wounding Terry.

“I want to warn police officers that they are not above the law. As law enforcers, they must lead and live by example,” he said.

He said officers were not allowed to use firearms against civilians but  were encouraged to resolve problems through other means.
