POLICE have shot, wounded and arrested a 25-year-old training institute student who is wanted for murder and a string of armed robberies in Madang.
According to a police report, the student was arrested at the roundabout intersection of Madang Airport and the main north-coast road. The student was wanted for a string of armed robberies committed as far back as 2018.
He was also allegedly involved in the murder of a single mother in Madang with an accomplice who was wanted for rape and a K50,000 burglary at Madang’s Phil’s Rapa Club.
The student was allegedly with a group of intoxicated youths trying to rob passing motorists at the intersection when a police task force on night patrol intercepted them.
Upon seeing the marked vehicle, they threw their belongings, including weapons, beer cans and mobile phones into nearby bushes and pretended to be sober.
But the student was clearly identified as a person of interest by the policemen and when approached, he tried to attack the officer with a knife.
The student, a father of one, was then shot and his accomplices fled in the dark.
