Police arrest suspects in boat, shop robberies

FIVE suspects in the robbery of a shop and boat at Karkar Island have been arrested by Madang police and are all are in custody.
Madang police station commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the gang before robbing occupants and sinking the boat, had held up a store on the island and stole K20,000 and store items.
The robbery of the shop was not known earlier.
Rubiang said the suspects made their way to boat area and got on as passengers from Karkar to Kubugam and Madang town.
He said they robbed the eight occupants then sank the boat before getting away.
Three occupants were later rescued, one was found dead and the other four were missing.
Rubiang said the suspects were about to leave the island on a boat when police caught up with them and told them to stop.
They were arrested and taken to the police station.
“I am now calling on the public travelling from Karkar to Madang to keep eye on the missing passengers.
“If you happen to locate the missing passengers, you must report it to the police,” he said.
Rubiang, meanwhile said police would continue normal Christmas and New Year operations.
