Police charge driver with dangerous driving causing death

POLICE in Manus have charged the driver of a vehicle involved in an accident that killed a passenger and injured 12 others in Ward 2, Lorengau town, with dangerous driving causing death.
Police commander Chief Insp David Yapu said Peter Bobby, 47, from Pak Island, Rapatona local level government (LLG), was charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.
“The offsider in the vehicle, Molat Posapak, 39, died at the Lorengau General Hospital on Sunday due to serious head and rib injuries.
“Bobby will appear in court (today).”According to police reports, the driver was driving a truck with passengers heading towards Lorengau town.
“He ran off the road and collided onto a power pole and the vehicle turned over, which resulted in 13 passengers being injured,” Chief Insp Yapu said.
“Five passengers including a five-year-old child sustained serious injures which included broken legs and hands and injuries to their heads and ribs.
“Three passengers were treated for minor injuries and discharged, 10 are still admitted at Lorengau.”
Chief Insp Yapu appealed to drivers of PMVs not to drink and drive as they carried passengers and were responsible for their safety.
