THERE will be no more market and boat stops at Voco Point until suspects involved in the burning down of the local police post are handed over to the police, Lae Met Supt Anthony Wagambie Jr says.
A disappointed Wagambie said this following the burning down of the Voco Point Police Post on Saturday evening allegedly by thugs.
The police post caught fire around midnight when no one was around.
This was the second police post in the city to be burnt down after the West Taraka Police Post was allegedly set on fire last November.
“I have directed that the Voco Point boat stop will not be used anymore and there will be no markets until the community assist us to identify and bring in the perpetrators,” Wagambie said.
“There will not be any market stalls in the Voco Point area.
“Those market stalls had enabled the settlers to earn a living. They will not do that now because there is no police. Their boys are responsible for the fire so they will not be entertained in the area.
“I am disgusted with what has happened.
“This is the second police post in a few months to be torched down by hooligans.
“A few months ago the West Taraka Police Post was burnt down. Now the Voco Point one.”
Wagambie said police facilities were there to serve the public.
He said police presence in small posts in the city was purposely to bring policing services closer to the people in the community.
He also said that people who burned down police posts had no regard and respect for the law.
“I want the illegal squatter settlements to be removed immediately, the relevant government authorities must immediately commence proceedings,” he said.
Wagambie said police would not back down from fighting crime despite two of their police posts being burnt down.
“Police is not shaken by this,” he said
“We will work even harder to rid the area of criminal elements.”
