A SUSPECT accused of hiring the vehicle used by an armed gang to rob a shop in Popondetta, Northern, has been detained at the Popondetta Police Station, provincial police commander Chief Insp Daniel Yangen says.
“The owner of the vehicle searched for the suspect who hired his 10-seater Land Cruiser on Monday and handed him over to the police after finding out that his vehicle was used in the armed robbery,” he said.
“The suspect told the owner that he wanted to hire it to buy coffee; instead, the vehicle was used by the gang to rob the Chinese-owned YC Supermarket in Popondetta.”
Chief Insp Yangen said yesterday that about 10 men were involved in robbing K100,000 in cash and valuables from the shop on Monday.
He said the police were able to identify all but one of the suspects using footage from the shop’s closed circuit television (CCTV) camera.
“We have identified all of them; only the dead suspect is unknown,” Chief Insp Yangen said.
“We believe that he came in from Port Moresby to join the others who are locals.”
