A DOUBLE murder on New Year’s Eve at Belmo village in the Yangoru-Saussia district of East Sepik and an assault at Gavien Block in Angoram were the major incidents reported to police over the Christmas-New Year period, according to provincial police commander Superintendent Robert Gesa.
Gesa said otherwise the province had a quiet time in that period.
“I am very thankful to police and the generally public in the province for behaving very well during this period despite a few major incidents,” he said.
He said in the Yangoru incident, a young man chopped another person to death during the early hours after suspecting him of having an affair with his wife.
“The relatives of the deceased retaliated and killed the person responsible for the first death,” Gesa said.
He told The National that both the deceased persons’ bodies were at the Boram General Hospital morgue while police were investigating.
In another incident, an elderly woman died at Maprik town after a tree fell on the house she was sleeping in.
Gesa said he could not give an update regarding a murder on Kairiru Island as policemen were yet to travel there.
He said the prime suspect in Dr Alphonse Rongap’s murder in June 2016 at Back Road in Lae, Morobe was still in police custody after his recapture last Friday at the Wewak wharf.
