POLICE found fake canned food during raids on two shops in Port Moresby on Saturday, as they investigated a suspected import syndicate operated by foreigners.
Insp Robert Wane, the head of the investigation team, said police would need the help of Customs, National Agriculture Quarantine Inspection Authority, the Internal Revenue Commission and Health Department to expose the illegal activities.
He said it was “just the tip of the iceberg”.
“We are starting and determined to continue our investigations to rid this country of illegal and dangerous activities.
“We will continue to ensure that there is proper business conduct,” Wane said.
“Members of the Gordon police and K9 units raided two shops run by the syndicate and found cartons of imitation corned pork.”
Police obtained a search warrant from the court after being told that cartons of corned beef and soft drinks valued at more than K100,000 were being stolen from a big foreign-owned wholesale store and sold to smaller shops also owned by foreigners.
The raids were conducted at Morata and Hohola.
Gordon police station commander Insp Mark Mosinakave said they acted on complaints that stolen goods and contraband were sold to locals in settlements around Port Moresby.
“Upon search on two locations, fake products were also confiscated,” he said.
Mosinakave warned consumers to “be sure that you are buying genuine products made from reputable companies registered in Papua New Guinea”.
He said the tins of meat and fish were not the same as the produced locally.
“I would advise my friends not to purchase them.
“I wouldn’t know what kind of meat had been packed as (the tin was) glued with plastic to make it look like a genuine product.”
Total value of the stolen items confiscated from the two stored was K38, 936.50.
The fake tinned stuff was valued as K2,793.15.
Mosinakave said the shop owners were expected to be questioned at the Gordon Police Station today.

TST and all Indian shops are the same (Asian own)
Stop N Shop is Fijian Indian (Asian origin)
    SVS – is Indonesian own
    Papindo is Indonesian own
    Jmart is Malaysian own
I dont see any more local choices we have now. do we?

  • send them out of the country. The are poisoning PNGeans with junks that worsens lifestyle diseases and malnutrition.

  • Good catch, please do the same for all Asian shops around the country. These Asians fake every thing from groceries to variety items. Soon whole of PNG will be “MADE IN CHINA”

  • No foreigner MUST work at the customs and immigration and at all sea ports. PNG is your country, PNGeans own this small beautiful country and every citizen must look after it. No one will take care of your country.

China was once a poor country. Today China is the 3rd leading economical country. No one from outside brought them up to this level, it was the people of that country who played their part to bring them to the 3rd economical powerful countries.
PNGeans do not let wild dogs enter your beautiful country . Soon or later we will be consuming canned meats that you and I have not consumed before.

  • This is not new to the country. Everyone is aware of the chinese fake/counterfeit products been brought into the country. So no one should be be surprised if the authorities and departments concerned are doing their work correctly. If PM JM say that it’s time to take back PNG, this is the day that chinese have to deported with their fake goods. Otherwise they might be feeding us with human flesh. Police and customers have to start weeding out chinese who are operating shops in the country.

  • It goes back to the government, police minister has to have a lot of say on that and has to deal with that at the highest level possible, PNG customs must be strictly blamed for their part in the conspiracy because how else could these goods reach the shores of PNG? . They must tell the True story.

  • 1. NO foreigner should be running some small kaibars and taka shops in the settlement. These people are NOT INVESTORS. They do not come with big bucks to invest. come as tourists, marry your sister and my aunty. and then settle in these shady areas and they do their wicked things.
    2. There should be a REVOLUTION in this country. all Papua New Guineans should refused to buy from all these foreign shops for only ONE MONTH and see what happens. all shops will close.
    3. Certain parts of Africa and India do NOT give business to Chinese. No Chinese shops, kaibars, restaurants, and clothing shop in India. You only see few dentists Chinese in India. If we think and act like them, we can reduce the Chines and Bangleshians to the streets to polish our shoes, or better still send them home.
    4. Police shouldn’t even be “questioning” these thugs. Their shops should be shut down, and they should be thrown to Bomana.

  • In social networks, I have seen chinese butchering human to pack them for trading…do not know where it goes or are being sold. Got to take extra care of these fake corned beef. You might eat a human meat instead of a corned beef. End times!

  • Lock them up for life in prison. Many Papua New Guinean lives must been lost consuming those fake products. Those Asians deserved to be hang.

  • We are wasting time providing comments. Sad for us PNG. The catch cry to Take Back PNG is somewhat too late. Yes, we just work up after the previous government under PO did a good hunt and catch at the expense of the rest of PNG who were fooled into catch cries such as, free education, free health etc. What a load of rubbish free issues without proper research and infrastructure in place. At least the current Prime Minister is honest for once to us all. He just proved to us on the Exxon Mobil deal and withdrew our SNT. Mr. Marape should have been PM 10 years ago. It would have been better by now.

  • Marcus are you ok??? stop giving them more power, just burg our governments to reset the laws for immigrants
