PORT Moresby police impounded a vehicle loaded with bags of betel nuts on Sunday and the suspect, who is allegedly a policeman, remains at large.
Police, in a statement, said the suspect was in a white Toyota LandCruiser when they pursued him from Baruni to Morata.
“Some by-standers at Morata, who witnessed the unfolding drama, said the vehicle was driven by a policeman who abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into the settlement,” police said in the statement.
According to National Capital District Met Supt Perou N’dranou, the nuts were smuggled by sea via dinghy operators and traders from Central into Papa, Lea Lea and Porebada villages.
Police said they acted on a tip-off and pursued the vehicle from Baruni before impounding it at the Morata community hall.
Met Supt N’dranou said the vehicle would be impounded until the policeman was identified and charged accordingly for breaching state of emergency laws.
