POLICE in Madang visited Karkar Island to conduct awareness on law and order issues and carry out investigations on some outstanding cases on the island.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said a team of police officers from the Madang police headquarters and from Sumkar were invited by community leaders and the people of ward four of the Karkar local level government to address increasing law and order issues.
He said the presence of police had seen the community surrender two gas cylinders that were used by the youths to produce homebrew and a homemade gun.
Police officers told community leaders to assist police in providing information on others who were producing, consuming and selling homebrew.
“Police presence with the people will help in reducing crime in communities so I am pleased with the community leaders on the island who invited the police to carry out awareness to the people.
“Police had received reports recently that Karkar Island was leading in law and order problems so I am pleased police officers are on the island,” Supt Rubiang said.
He said police would remain there for days to carry out investigations.
