Police lack funding

Popondetta police are badly in need of funding to carry out their operations, provincial  commander Chief Inspector Lincoln Gerari says.
Gerari said Popondetta police did not have funds to transport a Sowara robbery suspect arrested in Lae.
He said the suspect was in the police cell and they needed to have him transferred to Popondetta.
The suspect was among 10 men who were allegedly involved in the Viva Success Ltd robbery at Sowara last month in which K150,000 and a high-powered firearm were stolen.
Gerari said they had yet to recover the firearm, a police-issued rifle, which was taken from the officers at the time of the robbery.
Meanwhile, police along the North Coast intercepted and arrested a suspected drug smuggler.
Gerari said the suspect was allegedly smuggling drugs from Morobe to Northern when he was stopped by police at Kumusi.
The suspect was charged and is in police custody.
Gerari said these were the kinds of operations that Popondetta police were undertaking and needed funding support to continue to combat the lawlessness in the province.
