JIWAKA police have launched a manhunt for a village councillor who shot dead a university student while chasing homebrew consumers who were making a public nuisance of themselves last Friday.
Police commander Chief Insp Gideon Kauke told The National that the councillor from Kindi Village was on the run and gone into hiding.
“A police team is coordinating the manhunt.
“We have also told the village elders and community leaders to work with the police to help arrest the councillor,” he added.
Police confirmed that the University of Papua New Guinea tourism and hospitality final year student, Stenic Whome Poiya, was the victim.
Poiya was spending his holiday in the village when he was shot dead, he said. “The councillor unintentionally shot him.
“He was chasing homebrew and marijuana boys inside the market place when he pulled the trigger and hit Poiya,” Kauke said.
A post-mortem was conducted on Tuesday and the results would be available soon.
