Normal police patrols will continue into the New Year as Port Moresby police move to promote a safe and secure long weekend.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou told The National yesterday police would continue their normal shifts as they did during Christmas.
“We have police units doing operations both during the day and night, providing security all over the city,” N’Dranou said.
Senior Constable Jimmy Naime, leading the Boroko special operations unit to patrol the Boroko Tabari place, said their shifts were from 6am to 6pm every day.
“We patrol the bus stops and the Boroko area to make sure there are no opportunists roaming the streets to pick-pocket on people or pull their bags as these are the last days of the festive season,” he said.
“There are so many people trying to do their last shopping before heading home.”
Naime said people had the right to move around freely and without fear to run their respective errands.
Meanwhile, N’Dranou acknowledged his officers for a good job done over Christmas and commended the city for the safe and quiet Christmas celebrations without any major crime reported.
“The people should continue that good spirit to celebrate peacefully into the New Year as well,” he said.
