A JOINT police-military operation over the next six months in the Porgera Valley of Enga will deal with the increase in illegal mining, says Enga Governor Sir Peter Ipatas.
Sir Peter said since the reopening of the Porgera mine, “illegal miners have been flooding into the area, causing social issues and problems”.
“As the province does not have enough police manpower to address the issue, our only request is that the command and control of the call-out be given to the provincial police commander.”
Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae issued the six-month operation in Porgera yesterday.
Prime Minister James Marape last night confirmed that Cabinet had approved the operation.
Police Minister Peter Tsiamalili said that the situation in the Porgera Valley was a challenge because of the uncontrolled influx of settlers, some of whom were involved in illegal activities.
“As a result, an initial six-month period has been established for direct intervention by the security forces to assess the situation and adjust strategy and tactics as circumstances evolve on the ground,” he said.
Acting Defence Commander Philip Polewara said that he would make a statement today.
Sir Peter called on the people to assist in addressing the problems.
“You now own 10 per cent (of the mine). Do away with this mentality of always waiting for the Government or security personnel to come and address such issues. You work together to address this,” he said.
