AN 18-year-old was arrested and charged in Wewak for allegedly being in possession of a loaded pistol, according to police.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli said last Friday that the youth allegedly had in his possession the firearm and was walking around Wewak town when the security guards from a shop reported it to the police.
The public assisted the guards to catch the youth before alerting the police.
Police searched him and found the loaded gun.
“It is dangerous for young men to have such an offensive weapons because when they grow up, they could be criminals,” Supt Beli said.
“Parents and the guardians of children must now talk to their kids, especially the boys, and tell them not to get involved in criminal activities.”
He said the suspect had been charged and would appear in court when his court files were ready.
Meanwhile, in another incident a 16-years-old girl from Kweruwoh village in Kubalia was allegedly raped by a man from the same village.
Supt Beli said the girl’s parents were chased away by another man during an argument.
He said the matter was reported to Yangoru police who arrested and charged the suspect with sexual penetration of a minor.
The suspect is in custody at Yangoru Police Station.
