Police numbers on the rise

THE police to population ratio (PPR) has narrowed from 1:1374 in 2012 to 1:1,168.
“The police force manpower today is 7542. Police modernisation programmes and recruitment drives helped beef up our manpower,” Commissioner Gari Baki said.
Baki said the targeted manpower expansion for last year was 7500 officers but “we have surpassed this target with support from the national government”. He said there was no recruitment last year but this year the ration has improvged to 1:1205.
Baki said recruitment and training efforts were stifled by the lack of training facilities and funds.
“We have a yearly ceiling of 500 recruits at the Bomana Police Training College.”
He said policing was a 24/7 service and that resources requirement was unpredictable.
