Police officers covered by insurance, says Baki

POLICE Commissioner Gari Baki, pictured, says police officers are covered by insurance if they die or are injured in the line of duty.
“I can confirm that we have an insurance policy in place that covers police officers when they are on duty,” Baki said.
Baki was responding to concerns raised by the Public Employers’ Association about the safety of public servants working in Southern Highlands.
He said police officers had sworn an oath to serve the people in any capacity and at any location.
“They are guided by an oath which means that when they are posted to Hela or to any provinces, they are required to work there which is also guided by a policy,” Baki said.
“Police officers are guided by our rules and regulations and requirement for them to work.”
Baki said it was important for officers to know that the constabulary had an insurance policy which covered them if injured or killed in the line of duty.
He, however, said the biggest issue was funding: “Just two weeks ago, the police association and human resource officers from police headquarters discussed this issue with the Treasury department so that we get the funding directly.”
